When to Call for Emergency Heat Pump Repair
Your heat pump is completely off and won't restart
It's running but not heating or cooling your home
You hear grinding, banging, or screeching sounds
The system is tripping your circuit breaker repeatedly
Excessive ice has built up on the outdoor unit
Common Heat Pump Emergencies We Handle
Not Heating or Cooling
Causes range from refrigerant leaks and failed reversing valves to electrical faults. We diagnose on-site and quote before starting.
Compressor Failure
The most expensive repair. We'll confirm it and walk you through repair vs. replacement options, including same-day financing.
Electrical/Control Board
Capacitors, contactors, and control boards fail without warning. They are fast fixes but require a licensed technician to diagnose safely.
Refrigerant Leak
Running but not conditioning air? We locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to manufacturer specs.
Reversing Valve Failure
Allows the system to switch between heating and cooling. When stuck in one mode, it's repairable, not a death sentence for the system.
What to Do Before We Arrive
These six steps take five minutes and can prevent further damage or sometimes solve the problem entirely!
1. Check your thermostat
Make sure it's set to the correct mode and confirm the set point is at least 2–3°F different from the current room temperature.
2. Check your air filter
A clogged filter is the #1 cause of heat pump problems. If it's visibly dirty, replace it before calling. Sometimes that's all it takes!
3. Check your circuit breaker
Look for a tripped breaker labeled for the heat pump or air handler. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us.
4. Clear the outdoor unit
Make sure nothing blocks airflow such as leaves, ice, furniture, or overgrown vegetation.
5. Turn the system off if you hear grinding, or smell burning
Running a compromised system causes further damage. Set the thermostat to "off" and call us.
6. Note what you observed
Note the time the problem started, any unusual sounds, and how the system behaved. This helps our technician diagnose faster.
