Valley Park was home to the Mississippian Indians until the arrival of French and German settlers in the late 1700s. It was a railroad center for the Missouri Pacific line among others, helping the small settlement grow to its current population of about 7,000. Located along the Meramec River, Valley Park also benefited from barge traffic in its early days. Today Valley Park has a variety of trails along the river, though the river has caused major flooding on several occasions, most recently in 1993; for this reason a levee was built to prevent future disasters.
